"When Art Makes You Younger"

Hi, marvelous creative folks! Lately, I guess it's that time of the year, a few people decided to interview me. The feature I'm presenting you today has been done with an ambitious young Croatian Danijel Švinjski - a photographer, blogger, journalist and a full time creative guy who has been author of this extremely fast-growing-interesting-stories-about-emerging-artists blog Die Without Art.
The story behind this title he chose for my feature "When Art Makes You Younger" was in fact a funny thing. When I told him the date of my birth, he thought I made the mistake. I suddenly realized that actually - in media - my age before this interview was never revealed. Well, now you know. (I grow younger and psst, Kate Moss AND Cameron Diaz are both older than me ;-D

So read the article - it tells you stuff about my future plans, about my show in London and also, it says a few words about you, my dear readers! So I guess this was it for today: I wish you all a life full of exciting possibilities and please, stay young forever.

Something Repulsive

Jacob

I apologize for not being here for such a long time. Billion things is happening right now and by this I'm not thinking London Fashion Week! Meanwhile I was in Ljubljana for a few days, did some work, too. A dear friend, young fashion designer tells me I'm not posting enough of new stuff on my blog - I agree. I apologize again! I am here at Central Saint Martins on a postgraduate study of photography and my time is super limited (and a recession is a super bitch). So surprisingly enough, at this particular times I'm not so after impressing you, my dear friends, but to impress my tutors ... but how do I know they aren't checking this blog ?? = Indeed, you'd be surprised how many people from UK do pop up here...

However, I wish to pay a tribute to the Londoner who was a grand inspiration and a man who was also alumni of Central Saint Martins. It was exactly 10 days ago, while we were having this particular photo shot with Jacob, when I got the news from my ex fashion photography master that he was found dead. Rest in peace, Lee.

Dark Secrets? My Middle Name.

The only thing I despise about London is the feeling I'm missing something life-changing out. I am aware this is the side affect of a big city but knowing that's basically my personality issue I do suffer from this deeply. Especially when I have to spend the day in my office! I'd fly over the city day and night (yeah, like a batman!) and just land where there's bloody stuff happening. It's been a while I had partying weekend, so tonight it's the nickknight @Old Blue Last ... but first, Marta has to finish CSM homework!

Among other assignments, until Monday I have to make a little print portfolio based out of shots I did for and during the course. OMG, they are very very very sunless and blackish! Woot happened to you, one might put the screws to? Dunno, maybe it's reflecting my artistic aim - revealing dark secrets and strange mysteries of the human soul?

Oh yeah, I'm watching you, you little bats & monsters ... even when you crawl in the darkness!

About Those Insane Collaborations ...

“It’s really smart the way Dazed takes a group of artists, all at the top of their game, throws them into a studio with a canvas (the model) and knows that some insane collaboration will be the final product.” says model Lyle Lodwick.
Splendid idea, just throw me there sometimes too, you'll be dazed and amazed ... ;-)

7 things in 7 days

#1. I was walking with a home made cup of tea and a sandwich in a near Garret Park on a sunny day.
#2. I got email I'm now a part of VICE magazine blogging network (check the badge down right)
#3. I was hired to make photographs for a new vintage shop's web. (I was photographing a coat that once belonged to Audrey Hepburn.)
#4. After a great night away in Chelsea I drove home in a taxi at 8 AM
#5. I confess to the professor I still didn't wrote one word into a very complex Study Proposal two days before deadline.
#6. I cried to a friend over Skype (just a little, don't panic!)
#7. Today I started to write my Study Proposal which I'm still working on as we speak (and obviously taking a needed break). Will be working on it another 23 hours or so.

Have a great week and don't forget to send me postcards from wherever you are!!!

The Big Swimming Inspiration

That's Martin Strel, 52, a guy from Slovenia (my home country) who swam the world's most dangerous river, the mighty Amazon. I just recently watched the documentary movie "The Big River Man" and I must say that was - in fact - the most AMAZONG documentary movie I ever saw in my life! Awe-inspiring story, surreal and absolutely unforgettable.

And since VICE just did an fresh interview with the big guy, and since I'm kinda a fresh Vice member myself, I thought you might wanna read it. Check out this link!

Soldier becomes a Warrior

The most precious photograph I ever made in terms of not be able to see an emotion on a person face. I'm looking at this picture as an emotion itself. While my imagination is like "battlefield, wounded, warrior dying, sunset" without saying a single word a warrior like Emulgator makes that happen.

Dream Catcher, Margaritas & Secrets

London awaited me with open arms, for the first time. Je'tadore this year first course at St. Martins this Monday, especially after school special with girls... ;) Looking forward to tones of spring term homework & I can't even believe I said that. :D

But somehow everything feels like a million years passed by since the last time I was here. It's like a new time zone, new life! Perhaps I look at things differently now because I'm freshly inspired, but basically everything changed! I have a new flatmate, healthy tan, SNOW, new GIGS, the new room with a dream catcher on the wall (present from ex flatmate Jaka, the 1/2 of Kitsch Nitsch), new artistic motivations and - not least important, a NU lifestyle...

Wait, a new lifestyle? Yes: I smoked my last cigarette before Christmas - that was like forever-3-weeks-ago in Marocco. I just quitted. (Why? - I was such a fan of smoking?) I knooow. It's super-boring. But wanna know the SECRET?

It was the easiest thing I ever did.

Yesterday was hot. Today is WARM.

Winter must be cold for those with no warm memories, they say! Now, I know it's depressing time you're all going through (I see you, Twitters!) and just so you know that I'm not enjoying making your days even more miserable. It's completely okaj if some of you would like to believe I'm totally posting old summer photos here ... but I'm afraid this lovely shot was taken TODAY...! :) Jup, it's 5. January, 20 degrees, warm breeze, blue skies, golden sunshine ... and it is a Tuesday and stuff ;) I prayed Alah, and I finally got a decent photo from Essaouiraoof myself!

I'll post some photos of this place on Facebook, also will add link here, so you can see if you'd like to come sometimes too! It's really cool laid-back winter getaway place, cheap, (we love cheap!), great food, spices, ... and with a sunny terrace, what else could you possibly need?

Ok, this should make you feel better: I posted this to keep me warm through this months yet to come, because in a couple of days, I'm back in London again ... is it snowing, right? Dear God ... Well, I'll be strong: what a girl must do, a girl must do.

*I miss you, Marocco, come again soooooooooooon*

The Straight Story

Even though my first post last year started with a flu & recession, those two words surely weren't the trending topic that rocked my boat in 09. Oh no. I said "screw the recession" when the year started and I kept the promise: in totally my-kind-of manner I didn't give a damn about it. People were being careful and sticking to what they've got, me, quite the opposite. Of course I was broke ALMOST all of the time, but I'm a fighter and that didn't stop me from traveling and living 13 different countries in three different continents in 09 - you're damn right I counted them! And to go on - recession didn't stop me to enroll into leading UK art college and moving to London either ... I shall not go on, because, the rest, as they say, is history ;)

So 2009 year was about a few of my biggest dreams coming true *scroll back this blog and you'll get the picture* truly amazing year spent with legendary and inspiring people, yet also sad because of the lost of MJ ... However, this year was also about realizing some essential facts all over again. I'll just sum them up for you in short version, so we can all carry on with our lives, eh? :)

OK, AMBITIOUS BOYS AND GIRLS, READ IT AND REMEMBER IT :

It's not enough you're highly professional, not enough you have passion - or, in my case - you are passion, not enough you're an internationally recognized talent, you're a hard worker, on a way to master your craft and - on top of that - you have a personality to base a movie on. No! That is not enough at all. That is not what makes you get jobs that pays your bills out there. And I bet you wanna know what gets you jobs that pays your bills out there? I'll tell you what that is - IT IS PEOPLE, my dear friends. It is people who hires you and give you jobs that pays your bills. And you want to know more? Like, where are this people from? Well, think again - in the very beginning of your journey - this people are from your home country!! They are the ones that know about you already. They know about you very well. They know exactly what you do and how well you do it. The question is: what are they waiting for? Are you listening, Slovenia? There, I've said it.

In conclusion: I know I am stubborn rebel-with-a-dream and I understand this might not be THE must perfect timing for paying the most expensive rent on the planet in order to make my final postgraduate project. BUT I can not decide weather it is a good or bad timing for realizing my dream, can I? You can not tell your heart - "STOP for 10 years", can you?
So nevertheless - stay high on life with me and you'll see that one day we'll all drink champagne. Or mojito. Or cider. Or whatever. Just keep coming here and wish me happy 3th anniversary of this blog, because I might bloody deserve it. Cheers.

xoxo

PS: I'm visiting Slovenia somewhere in the start of February, for a week or maybe even two, hopefully earn some cash - I think this will make happy at least two people, who deserves gold medal for patience - one is Damijan and another is Primož. *I see that smileeee*

The Magical Start

Happy New Year, everyone!

It's 1. January 2010 and my day started highly exceptional: this morning my love and I woke up early, jogged through awakening medina to the lonely long sandy beach.
Do you agree that there's nothing like having all the beach for yourself?

For the first time in 14days that we're here in Essaouira, Marocco - today, the beach was really clean - like the Ocean splashed away all the dirtiness of the 00's? The sun was kissing me there - literally, and with a finger in the sand I draw J + M in the shape of heart.
And then we watched the waves go milky on the rocks... oh, that warm breeze in our faces. Intoxicating. We walked and jogged until we saw only sea, foam around the rocks in it and the desert far away ...
For a moment I stopped : this are the melting rocks!

2010, my friends, is going to be magical. Promise.

Ah, that Advertising Project I did for Gorenje

For some reason I kept my biggest advertising project of 2009 as a secret until now. Not on purpose, of course.

Sometimes magical things happens and one of them was that a big company Gorenje needed somebody for their advertising campaign of a new collection of retro fridge freezers. The true magic starts when they choose me, Marta Lamovšek, to solve all the fatal tasks of the ad campaign: idea solution, project managing and art direction & photography.

Why me, one might shout?

1) they wanted something fresh
2) they wanted something-MartaLamovšek
3) they wanted to go from "plain cold to just cool".

I pitched them six (6) ideas, some of them were pretty brilliant, perhaps dazzling, two really crazy (oops, but a bit too much), but one of them was just simple, fresh and sort of a keeper. Since they had no big budget planned for this campaign, they agree to go along with the "just cool". So I build 3 different placements for 3 kinds of color lines and a brand new image of that charming-touch-of-nostalgia.

So yeah, Gorenje Retro Collection project was a huge and very valuable experience for all of us. However, after 3 months (headaches:) the project was successfully finished - the client was happy and I was on that plane to LA. Then, after the summer of living and catching the california dream, the money was gone. Still, the reference stays. Finally, that nostalgic feeling in me tells me I also gotta say this - perhaps for the sake of my artistic future - may 2010 be all about this kind magic, yes?

Now please don't get too excited but I'm always slightly turned on when I see the red curtains moving. I feel like I'm going to be having sex with a complete stranger. Or like David once said "I know I'm going to see something new, something will be revealed."

There Comes an Adorable Man ...

I came across this Britain (female) designer with a passion in menswear so many billion times at Dazed in the past year, that it would be such a preposterous shame not to give her a GO here. In fact, I am more and more jealous of men just because of Katie Eary ... Well, not really, but lets say I'm glad that men's fashion is finally getting more daring & exciting! That said, it soon might open a new era of sweet little battles with ours men that dresses far to good not to be gays.

"Why menswear? It’s more fun to play with. We all have it in uss to dress up, but in human nature it is always the males who are far more grandosie and beautiful then the female. Its just since the Victorian era mens fashion became to a slave to ‘making things easier’. How did we go from the beautiful tied cravat to a tie with elastic hidden under the collar?" she said. I absolutely agree, men should be all gorgeous and fashion addicts like we are! We shall all benefit. Ha, ha!

Homework: Mr Neon & Miss Vampire

This shot belongs to a series of photographs I made last week for my homework on the "time and movement" assignment. I asked my roomates Jaka and Anina to be my models for the scenario I created in my mind - they were gladly to 'act in my movie' and were amazing to work with!!
So the story is about Mr Neon who visits his late love ... she appears in the grave yard as a ghost ... then, when the dark comes and she becomes a vampire he decided to take her bite just to be with her ...

I knooow, I'm so hopelessly romantic! :)

Alien Landed in Eastern Europe

"There’s something powerfully weird about this beautiful photoset by Marta Lamovsek, not least in this image, where the model really does look like an alien landed in eastern Europe." says Warren Ellis, well-known English writer on his well-known web page.
By the way, his new comic book SUPERGOD is out this Wednesday. Must say there is something powerfully weird about this beautiful cover ... and the title. (See the image bellow this post.)

I swear to God, I have to lay my hands on inside of that book.

Truth or Dare?

There is no future without a past, they say. My past is pretty mysterious, in a way. I could write a book about my life that nobody knows about ... but, I'm not into that - I have no need to tell you all my dirty little secrets.

Nevertheless you must be aware of the fact, that each time I create a photograph, a visual, I reveal a little bit more about myself: what I have been seeing, what I have been through, what touched my heart, what is my world all about... I can hide, but I can't escape, can I?

Brane B. Kastelic meets Marta L. Lamovšek

Pred dnevi sem v Londonu naredila intervju z Branetom Kastelicem. "Kako sem spoznala svojega novinarskega boga erotike?" je intervju za seksi Blogorolo, ki je pred dnevi izšla v tiskani verziji. Toplo jo vsem priporočam v branje - in gledanje!

Hja, kaj naj rečem, razen - z nedolžnim nasmehom do ušes: Brane, Brane, Brane ... ;)

Homework: Young Masters Exhibition

One of a few great stuff when visiting an art school like Saint Martins is all the amazing exhibitions you MUST see and then make a presentation. My homework was to go deeper into one of many "young masters" at The Cynthia Corbett Gallery - an artist Maisie Broadhead ... Must say I was impressed that the inspiration from Old Masters paintings, like above seen Nible Pinch is actually just an idea how to present jewellery - she is after all not a photographrer, but jewellery designer.

So her work is a collection of photography and accompanying jewellery. Installations have a lighthearted humor that pierces the illusion of wealth. Each photograph is a modern day re-interpretation of a historical painting where jewellery is at the centre of the image’s meaning. The photographs have accompanying jewellery that act as key props within each of the images.

When depicted in the photograph the jewellery appears quite traditional, yet when the pieces are experienced physically we see there is illusion at work (when viewed from the intended angle, makes the stone appear to be a large, precious treasure). In the flesh the jewellery is a collection of distorted and hidden half-truths by which Broadhead invites the viewer to reconsider stereotypical notions of status and wealth.

Stranger and the Gypsys

The story behind this editorial is about aristocratic woman who traveled around the globe searching freedom in every possible way. She hasn't found it.
Then, at last, the search brought her in the forgotten-from-the-world village of gypsyes in the south of Macedonia. She was deeply touched by the passion for life and a playful attitude that gypsy culture possess. She's been under that inspiration ever since ...

Always Learn From The Best

On scale 1 to 10 - how much did you missed me? Don't tell me you almost give up on me? Shame on you! ;) Well yeah, I admit that this time I might been taking a break too long - but - there has been some life changing situations for me in between here and there, I needed to take time for some mind-blowing good times with my friends in Ljubljana, did an editorial for Joy and Modna (both will be out in October issue) and not to mention all that dedicated creative-thinking on a subject "how will I survive in London? Where are you, my potential future clients? Sponsors? Anyone?" Well, I figure it out by now: what I'll do is I'll just work harder. There are no shortcuts to the place worth coming.

So, what else is new? Yesterday I was attending my first day at Central Saint Martins and that, my dear photography lovers, is about to be reflected a lot on this blog in the future. My new tutors, course director Andrew Watson and Kathryn Faulkner made our first day super vibrant and most promising! Also, well worth mentioning is that my fellow students and me is gonna be learning a lot from each other. People in the class are from all around the globe and from all sorts of different background: some of them had fine art education history, one of them is using their body as a camera (!!), some they are painters mixing photography, some had a degree from psycho analysis, indeed some fantastic photographers I've already catch a glimpse of their work but of course - most of them I still haven't be able to talk to during the full first day.

What I suspect is, that I am most likely the only Pg student of photography in the class who has been involved in professional fashion photography. Thanks to Aleš Bravničar I had the best school of fashion photography one can have in Slovenia. And now being a part of a student community of one the most famous art school in the world - with alumni fashion designers like John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Gereth Pugh, Stella McCartney, Paul Smith etc. this means I could be smoking in front of that old respected building with a new Vivienne Westwood ... and who knows: I may learn a thing or two again :)

Between Here and There

Tell you something: there's no place like California, however, there's a place called Home. Truth is, I actually haven't got one at the moment. I mean, I have many of them, but well, I'm now living here and there and in between. No, sometimes home is not necessarily where your heart is. And it's not always fun, It can be hard, too. Nomad lifestyle? It's a lifestyle one must try sometimes :)

So here's the news: despite so many adventures I had so far, it's official: I'm home sick to my bones! Yea, I'm coming to visit! ;) I figure it's not gonna be enough time to do everything and to see everybody in this 14 and so days, since meanwhile I have some work to do 2, but still, we have some serious catch up to do!! It's been a loooong amazing summer ... but this Summer is not even over ;)

Here, this is my timeline from the middle of June, in case you are a bit confused when one moment I twitt from here, and the second from there ... just in case someone is curious, lol!

Magical Girl from Ely's Yard

Look at that girl and picture this: as I was hanging around on Ely's yard I set down by the street at the point where from the speakers strike the tune of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean. All of a sudden I noticed this girl ... this kid starts dancing to that song, I mean, she makes the MJ's moves with such confidence and style like she's on the top of the world. Meanwhile, her parents were around as well and you could see her father encouraging her. Stunned by her performance I couldn't help capturing her with my little camera. As she noticed it, she acts naturally as she's used to it.
She must be five or so, but she's a great mover and you could tell she's born to be on the stage. She was born to be a star. I could see it in her eyes ...

"She was more like a beauty queen from a movie scene I said don't mind, but what do you mean I am the one Who will dance on the floor in the round
... He told me her name was Billie Jean ..."
